Volunteer Candidates Involved in Disability Awareness

Kota Malang—Since the opening of recruitment of volunteer for students with disabilities in November 2018, prospective volunteers were very enthusiastic to undergo mentoring. As in the previous recruitment process, they have to take part in Disability Awareness training before getting the schedule. This activity was held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, on the 10th Floor of the Gedung Layanan Bersama Universitas Brawijaya.

The enthusiasm of the participants was seen in the training process. Of the total registrants, almost 80 percent attended this training activity. Therefore, PSLD UB manages it by finding a room sufficient to accommodate participants. Although the training lasted a full day since morning, participants arrived and stayed in the room until the activity over.

The activity was opened by Alies Poetri Lintangsari, Coordinator of the Assistance Division of PSLD UB. In addition to opening the activity, Lintang, as she is well known, also conveyed basics related to assisting students with disabilities. She stressed the importance of having a social model view on the disability issues.

“So, there is Social Model of Disability. This perspective shifts from merely seeing persons with disabilities as a problem. We will have it from now, “Lintang said in his presentation.

Assistance Simulation

After delivering the basics of Disability Awareness, participants received assistance simulation. This simulation was divided into four groups according to the consideration of accommodation needs, namely Deaf post, daksa posts, mental posts, and net posts. Participants totaling up to 73 people were divided into four groups to undergo each post.

In each post there is a duty to deliver specifically related to the variety of disabilities in Universitas Brawijaya. Participants who were divided into four groups took turns to another post.

At the Tuli post, participants were introduced to the basics of Sign Language to communicate with Deaf. Likewise in other posts, so participants can understand the needs, accommodations, and ways of assistance.

Yanda Sinaga, a facilitator at the Tuli post, seemed eager to provide games in the form of ways to communicate with Sign Language to participants. “Face expressions are also important here, besides we also know what the signs are to convey certain meanings,” Yanda said.

In the netra post, Rachmawati Ayu Kuswoyo assisted participants by practicing guiding and assisting persons with visual disabilities. She carried a cane and eye patch and participants took turns becoming blind persons and their companion. “The greeting must be clear.
